Week 6 Challenge – Pixel Art

Inpiration

I wanted the pixel art for my platformer to be Halloween and autumn themed, so I chose to use mostly orange colour palettes and use sheet ghosts as the sprites.

Process

To create pixel art, first I created a 32 by 32-pixel canvas on photoshop and then switched from the brush tool to the pencil tool as the pencil can be one square pixel while the paintbrush cannot. For the sprites I started with the basic shape of a ghost and its eyes and then filled it in with off white before adding shadows where folds in the draped fabric would be for a sheet ghost. After shading in the folds I adjusted the bottom to fit with how the fabric would hang according to the shadows. To create the moving sprites i copy and pasted the original sprite then adjusted the bottom edges to look like fabric moving in a breeze.

The enemy has an inverted colour palette to the player sprite to communicate clearly that it is an opponent and not a friendly character. The enemy has unnatural movement as a way to unnerve the player

The ground keeps an autumn colour scheme with shades of orange topping the dirt which are a more vibrant version of the background colour palette.

The fire also sticks to a similar colour palette

Evaluation

I think the pixel art is well done and sticks to its theme very well. I also like the reduced colour palette which is necessary to pixel art due to the lack of room to have colours and think it makes the different sprites and objects more cohesive.
