Week 5 Challenge – Colour and Shape Theory

Inspiration

My ideas for creating characters out of shapes started with foxes as in real life they’re already very angular and they’re often simplified in prints and patterns to just triangles. When thinking of rounder animals i came up with penguins and turtles because of their round shell.

Process
Initial sketches building characters from shape

I used triangular shapes to create the fox sprites to convey that they are cunning and dangerous; this is also implied by their red colour scheme. The foxes also have very clear silhouettes, you would likely be able to tell they were foxes if they were blacked out.

The penguin is made up of circles and rounded shapes to show harmlessness and cuteness. Its colour scheme is blue and orange as they are contrasting colours the orange appears brighter which makes the colours more lively.

I also created a sketch of a rounded human, but it wasn’t suitable for my top-down shooter, so I didn’t take it any further.

Evaluation

I think I used shape theory well to convey my characters clearly however i do think I could’ve explored shape theory in humanoid characters more. I also think some of my lines and colour could be cleaner to make the sprites more refined.
